Service Fees

Quite often, the issue of legal fees are a significant concern for a client when speaking to a lawyer for the first time. Jerry believes that this not conducive to a productive first meeting, as the focus of the discussion should always be on the client’s legal issues. For this reason, Jerry has published his rates and cost estimates for common legal matters below.

  • Introductory 15-minute telephone enquiry*:    No Charge

  • In-person or telephone consultation: $300 / hour - 1/2 hour consultations available.

  • Reviewing and opining on draft documents and agreements:  $500 - $1,000

  • Filing trademark applications (complete process, from filing to registration): $1,200 - $2,000

  • Drafting or responding to a demand letter:    $500 - $1,000

  • Patent / trademark search:  $500 - $1,000

  • IP licensing agreement:   $1,000 - $2,000

  • Comprehensive IP opinion (e.g., infringement or validity opinion):  $2,500 +

  • Preparing statement of claim or statement of defence: $2,500 - $7,500

  • Preparing patent applications (complete process, from filing to registration): $8,000 - $20,000

For preparing trademark and patent applications, the rates will heavily depend on the nature of the mark and/or invention. Jerry will work with registered patent and trademark agents to achieve the most cost-effective result for the client. Jerry can provide a more detailed estimate for trademark and patent filings after an initial discussion.

For all other work, Jerry typically bills by the hour, and his hourly rate is $300 per hour. An estimate will always be provided before commencing and invoicing for any work. Fixed fee arrangements are also available, particularly with respect to small claims court matters and standard business agreements.

The above rates are subject to change, and do not include HST where applicable. For further information on rates, please contact Jerry.

*The purpose of the initial telephone enquiry is to determine whether Jerry is able to assist with the matter, and to provide Jerry with the opportunity to check for conflicts.
